Dealing with Spam

Spam is and ever-growing problem on the Internet. Until legislative and technical solutions improve, there is little that can be done to keep at least some spam from reaching you. There are however some practices that can help reduce the amount of spam that you receive.

  1. Protect your personal and business e-mail whenever possible.
  2. When signing up for web site services, promotions, sweepstakes, or putting your email into a web site form, check their privacy policy to make sure they are not sharing your information with third parties. While most web sites will adhere to their privacy policy, the reality is that your email may be sold or acquired in business transfers, so beware that if you use your main e-mail address, there is a possibility that you may be signing up for spam.
  3. Do not open e-mails that are obviously spam or from unknown senders. Spammers frequently use images and other tracking devices in emails, that upon opening, inform the sender that the email was received and validate the your email address.
  4. Turn off the preview function in your email client to keep #1 from happening when you receive email.
  5. Do not click on links in e-mails from unknown senders unless you want them to validate your email address.
  6. Sign-up for free email accounts and use them as an alternative to your personal or business email address in any suspect circumstance.
  7. Use filtering to clearly identify or delete spam email.
